Supporting You As You Support Them

Therapy for the Families & Caregivers of LGBTQ+ Individuals

Hi, I’m Dr. Lauren Bartholomew. As a therapist, some of the work I most deeply enjoy is supporting the parents, caregivers, and loved ones of individuals who are walking their authentic path as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

As your loved one undergoes their own process and journey, it’s important that you have a space where you can ask questions, seek support, and learn new ways to show up fully for your loved one.

You’re ready for understanding and guidance—and I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with you.

When a loved one has come out to you, they are inviting you into their world as a support. It’s vital that you also receive support and care in your journey alongside them.

Therapy for Caregivers & Loved Ones of LGBTQ+ People may be for you if…

You have questions you’re afraid to ask

We often have many questions about the things we don’t yet understand, and you’re looking for a non-judgmental space to find the answers you need. In therapy for caregivers and family members of LGBTQ+ people, you can explore your own thoughts and questions and receive answers that are tailored to your unique questions and needs.

You need a space where you can explore your own journey

When someone we love comes out to us, we understand that they have their own unique journey. Similarly, as we are welcomed into their world and learn more about who they are, we will have our own personal journeys to take. Therapy is a space to explore what lies ahead for you as the loved one of someone who is LGBTQ+.

You want to strengthen your relationship

You want to know how to support your loved one and strengthen your relationship with them. Therapy is a place where we can explore the strengths and challenging aspects of your relationship, as well as the positive characteristics that you bring to the relationship. Together, we’ll explore how to continue strengthening your relationship with your loved one, for a more fulfilling and supportive experience for both of you.

My Approach to Therapy for Caregivers and Family Members of LGBTQ+ Individuals

In my work with my clients, I take a non-judgmental, affirming, and validating approach to therapy. Family members and caregivers who seek therapy with me are welcomed by a therapist who won’t judge them for asking questions, and who won’t minimize or invalidate their experiences as they learn how to support their LGBTQ+ loved one.

In therapy, I work from psychodynamic, humanistic, and internal family systems approaches to help you cope with the internal and external changes in your relationship with your loved one. Using these approaches, we will help you understand your experience and the experience of your loved one, explore your questions and concerns that help you build inner knowledge and confidence, and give you the space you need to explore your authentic self within your relationship.
